New NCSC training package to help schools improve their cyber security.

Technology plays a crucial role in the operation of schools and the education of pupils. But, for this technology to run smoothly, it must be protected from a cyber incident or attack.

To help with this, the NCSC has produced a cyber security training package aimed specifically at school staff. The package gives staff an awareness of the cyber security risks which schools face andpractical information that will help them protect against these risks.

Keen to learn

It seems that there’s a thirst for cyber security knowledge in UK schools. Joint research from the NCSC and London Grid for Learning, found that 92% of schools surveyed would welcome more cyber security awareness training for their staff.

The training material makes use of real-life case studies to help schools understand how cyber incidents can affect the school environment. Following this, it develops the four key steps of good cyber hygiene that all staff can follow to help prevent a cyber incident from happening. These steps, which cover phishing, strong passwords, device security and calling out anything unusual or unexpected, can help staff to protect their school.

Training

The training is available in two formats:

  • scripted presentation pack for group delivery by schools or education partners, and
  • self-learn video for staff to complete by themselves.

Both deliver the same material.

At the end of the training, a link to a downloadable training certificate can be accessed. This can be printed, so staff and schools can demonstrate their cyber security awareness training.

The training builds on the wider package of NCSC cyber security resources for the school sector. These resources, along with the cyber security training, can significantly reduce the disruption which a cyber incident or attack can cause.
